Automated Flagger Assistance Devices (AFADs)

AFAD

AWP leverages improved automatic flagging assistance devices (AFADs) that incorporate ‘Smart’ technology to increase work zone safety and operate more efficiently.

The AFAD is an automated machine with an 8-foot gate arm, and stop and caution lights that takes the place of a flagging Protector in the field. The AFAD creates an independent Local Area Network (no cell service required) and is equipped with two high-definition cameras with 360-degree view and night-vision infrared capabilities for recorded surveillance. The compact unit is easily moved and assembled on site, and is controlled by a tablet from a safe location. Protectors are deployed in the center of the job site instead of at either remote end, so they have better customer communication and work zone visibility and control.

AFADs can be utilized in a variety of job-site scenarios including standard stationary flagging operations and those with a side road; 3-way and 4-way intersections; and large road constructions jobs with extended work zones. It also connects with Google’s WAZE (and soon Google Maps) via its onboard GPS system, and can divert drivers around work zones for an added layer of accident prevention. AFADs have been shown to improve driver compliance and are increasingly utilized on DOT job sites. They are recognized as the safest alternative to human flaggers for temporary, short-term, work-zone traffic control.
